Many central and local government departments and executive agencies have initiated ‘smart working’ programmes. In practice, people often perceive these negatively, as ‘just saving space’. While ZZA champion effective resource use, we promote smart working for its capacity to enable individual and team performance. Working with the leaders of the UK government’s biggest department, we focused on what smart-er working could offer to enhance DWP’s operations. Enlisting buy-in from DWP leaders, we generated a shared strategic mandate that they endorsed.
